Types of Classes

Pedigree Classes

Purebred cavies are assessed based on established breed standards as outlined by the Australian National Cavy Council. In Victoria, breeds are categorised into six types: Marked, Self, Crested, Ticked, Coarsecoat, and Longhair. The Judge or Judges determine the Best and Reserve within each type, which are then compared against each other for the overall Best in Show and Reserve in Show.

Condition Classes

Condition/Pet classes are suited for cavies that do not adhere to a breed standard or do not meet the presentation requirements for pedigree classes (eg. longhaired cavies with their hair cut). The judge will judge each cavy on presentation and body condition. Cavies should be well muscled and cobby without body excessive fat. Condition/Pet classes are separated into Junior and Open Categories with the best cavy in each category being judged for Best Condition in Show. There are 4 classes for condition; Small Sow, Small Boar, Large Sow and Large Boar.

Breeders Exhibit

This class is very similar to the Pedigree class with only purebred cavies allowed to enter. However, cavies must be bred by the exhibitor themselves.  Exhibitors are restricted to two (2) entrants per Group. Breeders Exhibit classes are only held at Championship Shows.

Junior Exhibit

Junior Exhibit is a single class of cavies exhibited by Juniors Under 17 years of age. Exhibits must be Pedigree cavies and also entered in the Pedigree Show. Longhairs are to be in show coat. Only one (1) entrant is allowed per exhibitor. The exhibits are judged to their relevant breed standard and the best exhibit is then awarded Junior Exhibit.

Handler Classes

These classes are judged on the show handling and breed knowledge skills of the exhibitor. Exhibits must be

Breeds Class cavies and also entered in the Breed Class Show, Longhairs are to be in show coat.  Junior is separated into the following age groups: Under 8, Under 12, Under 17. Cavies must be exhibited at the show table by the Junior without Adult supervision. These classes are restricted to new members in the first 12 months of their membership.

Mega Pet Shows

Since 2022 the CCV has additionally run Mega Pet Shows. These are held in the Metropolitan area as part of a normal club show or specially run regional shows, currently in Geelong and Ballarat. A normal members club show will run in conjunction to the pet shows, providing a great opportunity to come and see all the unique breeds and ask any questions.

You do not need to be a member of the CCV to come visit or enter your guinea pig in the Mega Pet Shows. These are usually a great day out and everyone is welcome. A merchandise table and canteen are run on the day as well as a raffle and lots of prizes.

Approx 20 special classes are run for these events and are open to members and non members. Some examples include; Cutest Face, Most Colourful, Biggest Eyes, Biggest Ears, Biggest Butt, Heaviest, Funky Hair, Fastest Eater, Best Couple, Junior Handler etc.

Class placings and overall awards are given on the day and usually provided thanks to our wonderful sponsors.

Entries can be done prior to the event or on the day via the show secretary. Times and entry process are usually outlined on our Facebook posts prior to the event. Entry is usually $4 per guinea pig per class and bulk entry discounts offered as you can enter in multiple suitable classes.

Judging of the Mega Pet Show classes is usually done by current CCV members. Apart from the showing, the Mega Pet Shows (like all our shows) are also an opportunity for you to get direct feedback and education from our members on any cavy related questions (nutrition, health, housing, care, handling etc). Also some breeders may have cavies for sale at the shows.

Preparing your cavy for a show!

Prepare the cavy the day/night before the show, that way you will be ready to go the following morning!

The first requirement is that the cavy must be a minimum of 3 months of age to be shown.  They must also be in good health. Do not enter your cavy if you think she is pregnant, feeding babies or if he/she has significant hair loss or mites.

To prepare your cavy, you must:

  • Trim it's nails (using normal human clippers or pet clippers).
  • Clean it's feet (with a toothbrush).
  • Remove loose coat (use your hands or a gentle brush).  This is called 'grooming'.  To groom a cavy, the guard hairs must be removed.  If you take the coat between your  fingers length ways, the 'guard' hairs are the hairs that are longer than the normal coat.
  • And give them a warm bath in a pet safe shampoo. (Make sure the mouth, ears and eyes don't come in contact with water.)

Tips & Tricks

Cavies are shown on carpet mats, which must be clean.  The size of these mats are 25 cm wide x 35 cm long. These can be purchased from the club.

On Show Day when you receive your entries, there will be attached some small sticky dots with numbers on them.  These dots are to be attached to your cavy's left ear.  These numbers will be called, when it is time for your class to be judged.

If you are not a member of the club, a pet/condition entry form can be filled out on the day.  Non members are permitted to show twice, before becoming a CCV member is a requirement for future showing. All non members are judged in a class of their own, and will not compete for the Best Condition Cavy in Show.

There are ribbons or certificates to win in all classes.  The exhibitor who received a 1st from each section in the Members Condition (Pet) classes will be asked back to the table and will be in the running for Best Condition (Pet) Cavy in show.

The CCV would like to advise exhibitors to bring their own table to the show if you would like your carry/travel cages and other items you bring to be up off the floor.  Chairs are available at the hall.
